Vol. 463 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sale of Lands.

John O'Donoghue

Ceist:

37 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to change the law on the formalities governing contracts for the sale or other disposition of an interest in land with a view to removing the uncertainty which has come to surround the operation of Statute law in this area in view of remarks made by a judge (details supplied) in the case of Boyle v Lee and Goyns ILRM, volume 12, No. 2, page 65. [3833/96]

The area of law which the Deputy is alluding to in his question is a particularly complex one and such changes as he might be contemplating would not necessarily be to the benefit of vendors and purchasers in all situations. Indeed, there has been no contact with my Department to suggest that there is general dissatisfaction with the existing scheme of things. However, I am prepared to keep the matter under review and any decisions made on legisative change in this area will be announced in the usual way.
