Vol. 463 No. 3

Written Answers. - Practical Training Placements.

Noel Treacy

Ceist:

99 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Health the action, if any, he proposes to take to ensure that practical training opportunities are provided for third-level students who are currently pursuing an environmental health course and who normally get practical work with health boards during the summer time; if he will guarantee that this facility will be available during the summer of 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6101/96]

Limerick East): Students of environmental health are due to commence their professional practice placement in April 1996. These placements are traditionally made throughout the eight regional health boards. However, due to a work to rule by environmental health officers, it has not been feasible to secure their co-operation in relation to the supervision of students while on placement.

The Dublin Institute of Technology has alternative arrangements in place whereby students will be placed in industry to secure their practical experience. I have been assured by the Dublin Institute of Technology that the practical training obtained will be of equal benefit to the students.
