Vol. 463 No. 5

Written Answers. - Oberstown House (Dublin) Security.

John O'Donoghue

Ceist:

34 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, she intends to take with a view to improving security at the Oberstown detention centre. [3831/96]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that steps are already being taken to bring about an improved level of security at the Oberstown campus.

At my request, a campus security review committee comprised of senior representatives of the three centres located on the campus, has carried out a detailed review of existing security arrangements.

Arising from this review, my Department is currently in discussion with the management authorities of the three centres with a view to putting a number of additional security measures in place.

I can assure the House that I fully appreciate the genuine concerns of residents living in the Oberstown area in relation to absconds from the centre. While the nature of these facilities is such that one can never guarantee absolute security. I am confident that the measures now under consideration will provide a level of assurance for the future which residents of the area and society in general are entitled to expect.
