Vol. 463 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

61 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the reports, if any, she has received from the interdepartmental co-ordinating committee on services for young people with special educational needs for schools in Dublin 1, 3, 5 and 9; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6598/96]

As I recently indicated to the Deputy, it is not envisaged that the interdepartmental co-ordinating committee on services for young people with special educational needs will engage in the presentation of formal reports.

The role of the committee is to seek to achieve maximum co-ordination of service delivery through consultation and agreement with relevant parties. As part of this process, the committee will keep the Minister for Health and myself informed of its work and will consult where necessary on particular issues.

The work of the committee is focused on approaches to service delivery in relation to special needs children nationally. The needs of schools in particular locations, such as those mentioned by the Deputy, will not generally form a direct part of the committee's deliberations.
