100 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment if he will introduce specific grants to encourage research into sustainable product development, the aim of such products being to reduce the overall environmental influence of a product in all its life cycle stages; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Funding for research into cleaner production and environmentally sustainable resources management is available under the operational programme for environmental services, 1994-99. One of the objectives is to encourage the production and provision of more environmentally acceptable goods and services.
A range of other research and general industrial grants, which is available from the industrial promotion agencies, also includes the possibility of grant-aid for research into sustainable product development.
