Vol. 464 No. 3

Written Answers. - Semi-State Sector.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

29 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will make a statement on the semi-State sector in view of his publicly stated view on this sector shortly after assuming office. [7977/96]

My prime objective as Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications is to put in place a far reaching strategy to enhance and upgrade all three integrated sectors under my Department's aegis.

My policy's central aim is to secure the future of these State companies, to protect and preserve their assets, and to put the companies in a position where not alone will they survive, but will be able to thrive and prosper in the new competitive and deregulated environment in which they will have to operate.
I am confident that my five stranded strategy, comprising competitive rather than monopoly pricing, increased customer focus, performance measurement, long-term planning rather than short-term tactics and effective management of change will deliver the competitive infrastructure necessary to ensure that the State companies in question have a profitable and sustainable future.
