Vol. 464 No. 3

Written Answers. - Draft Guidelines for Telecommunications Facilities.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

62 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment the current status of his draft guidelines for telecommunications antennae and support structures for compilation issued in January 1996; the acceptable planning criteria, if any, governing health; and whether a limitation of 10 cm-2 power density on emissions can be inserted into local county development plans under section 3.2.1. [8241/96]

My Department is examining the extensive comments received on the draft consultation guidelines with a view to issuing guidelines in final form as soon as possible.

As to the question of emissions, the draft consultation guidelines provide that applicants for planning permission should be required to furnish evidence that the proposed installations comply with the guidelines of the International Radiological Protection Association, or other internationally accepted standards, in order to ensure the use of best international practice. There have been a number of submissions on this issue including the question of a power density limitation, and these are being considered.
