I accept there are sound political reasons for enlargement of the EU, but will the Taoiseach agree there are major unresolved issues among the existing 15 members, such as the future of CAP, which has been referred to, monetary union and the relationship with the Western European Union, and that those issues must be resolved before rushing to further enlargement?

The answer to the first, second and third parts of the Deputy's question is yes. On the latter question, that is precisely the approach we are taking. We do not propose to commence enlargement negotiations until the Intergovernmental Conference is over, by which time we will be on course for European Monetary Union.
