Vol. 465 No. 1

Written Answers. - In-traineeships for Civil Servants.

Pat the Cope Gallagher

Ceist:

65 Mr. Gallagher (Donegal South-West) asked the Minister for Finance whether he will support initiatives for in-traineeships for graduates within the Irish Civil Service similar to in-trainee programmes that are run within the European Commission; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9345/96]

I am not certain as to the specific initiatives to which the Deputy refers. Any such proposals would be considered on their merits. I have no plans at present for the creation of in-traineeships for graduates within the Irish Civil Service. Some of the aims of in-service training within the European Commission, to which the Deputy refers, such as familiarisation with the objectives and problems of European integration are of specific relevance to the European Commission rather than to the Irish Civil Service.

There are excellent career opportunities for graduates who compete successfully for positions in the Irish Civil Service such as administrative officer, third secretary and executive officer as well as a variety of openings in the professional-departmental areas.
