Vol. 465 No. 1

Written Answers. - Inspectorate of Social Services.

Pat Gallagher

Ceist:

82 Mr. Gallagher (Laoighis-Offaly) asked the Minister for Health if he will support the establishment of an independent inspectorate for mental handicap services, similar to that which currently exists in Great Britain, as was recently called for at the Psychiatric Nurses' Association conference; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9265/96]

As the Deputy may be aware, an inspectorate of social services will be established in the near future, attached to the Department of Health. While the inspectorate will give priority to quality assurance and the audit of child care practice, it is intended that it will, in time, develop a role in relation to standards of care in services for people with a disability and the dependent elderly.
