All locks on the Shannon-Erne Waterway are fully automated and are user operated by means of a smart card. On the Shannon itself a number of locks such as those at Athlone and Drumshanbo are also fully automated while others are partially so. There are no immediate plans to fully automate all locks on the Shannon where lock-keepers are employed to operate them.
