Vol. 465 No. 6

Written Answers. - Point Theatre (Dublin) Investigation.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

232 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice the nature and extent of the Garda inquiry into the tragic events which took place at the Point Theatre on Saturday, 11 May 1996: whether capacities were agreed between the promoters and the Garda Chief Superintendent for the area as recommended in the Hamilton Committee Report, 1990; the other issues that will be examined in this inquiry; whether its finding be made available to Deputy Haughey; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10192/96]

I am awaiting the outcome of a full Garda investigation into the events which took place at the Point Theatre on Saturday 11 May 1996. This Garda investigation will include the following: (a) the preparation of a comprehensive report to the city corner into the death of a young woman; (b) whether a breach of the Criminal Law has occurred. If such a breach has occurred a file will be sent to the D.P.P. for a decision as to whether or not to prosecute.

I am advised that a music and singing licence under the Public Health Acts Amendment Act, 1890, and a Public Dancing Licence under the Public Dance Halls Act, 1935 are in force in respect of the Point Theatre. I understand that on the recommendation of the fire officer, the District Court judge, when issuing the licences, imposed a limit of 8,500 for such events.

I am not in a position to make further comment at this point pending completion of the Garda investigation.
