Vol. 465 No. 6

Written Answers. - Health Board Stock Control.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

110 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health his views on the lack of stock records relating to drugs and medicines in the health boards. [10061/96]

Limerick East): My Department is conscious of the need for improved controls and procedures in relation to all aspects of material management and stock control within the health services, and continues to support health boards and hospitals in improving systems. While there are specific clinical and legal issues surrounding the handling of drugs, I am anxious that the general principles of best practice be adhered to in this area.

Because of these concerns, in April 1995, I established a Materials Management Advisory Group which is to report shortly. I expect that the report will include recommendations in relation to all aspects of materials management, including the issue of stock records for drugs and medicines.
