Vol. 465 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sewage Outfalls Policy.

Seán Power

Ceist:

71 Mr. Power asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department has adopted a policy of ensuring that sewage outfalls will not be placed within 1.5 kilometres of public water in-take points. [10584/96]

Each state funded sewerage scheme is examined by my Department's technical staff to ensure that technical, environmental protection and public health and safety matters are fully addressed in the design of the scheme. This includes ensuring that treated effluent will not cause deterioration of the water quality, at any abstraction point downstream, below the level required by the EU (Quality of Surface Water Intended for the Abstraction of Drinking Water) Regulations, 1989. These regulations do not prescribe a minimum distance between effluent discharge and water abstraction points as this would vary depending on a number of factors.
