Vol. 465 No. 8

Written Answers. - Organic Farming.

Hugh Byrne

Ceist:

14 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he has satisfied himself with the level of research and development into methods of organic farming. [10618/96]

As the Deputy is I am sure aware the matter of research in farming, including organic farming, is a matter for Teagasc. However, I should point out that since 1990 Teagasc has been engaged in research at the organic unit in Johnstown Castle and furthermore considerable research has been carried out at the Teagasc centre in Kildalton and at Mountbellew agricultural college. Indeed, the organic unit at Johnstown Castle continues to be operated to organic standards and important scientific information will continue to be assimilated there.

My Department has additionally provided for the development of the organic farming sector for the past number of years through a series of initiatives in promotion, research, training and education. At the present time the sector is being developed through a special supplementary measure under the rural environment protection scheme (REPS). This special measure provides attractive financial farming in accordance with a five year agri-environmental plan. Under the Operational Programme for Agriculture, Rural Development Forestry 1994-99 an allocation of £1 million has been provided for the development of the organic sector in the areas of marketing and promotions and distribution of organic produce.

I am satisfied that a reasonable level of research and development has been carried out in the organic sector. While Teagasc has provided a worthwhile service in the areas of organic research and advice in recent years my Department will be appraising the role which Teagasc can play in these areas to meet the future needs of this expanding sector.
