Vol. 465 No. 8

Written Answers. - Animal Feedstuffs Labelling.

James Leonard

Ceist:

19 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to introduce measures for listing ingredients in compound animal feed. [10614/96]

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

53 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to make mandatory the listing of ingredients in all animal feed stuffs in order to ensure the integrity and transparency of the food chain. [10628/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 19 and 53 together.

The labelling requirements for compound feedingstuffs are set out in Council Directive 79/373/EEC, as amended.

These provide that compound feedingstuffs may not be marketed unless the packaging, the container or the label shows all the ingredients used in the feed in descending order by weight. Alternatively compounders have the option of declaring categories of ingredients which are prescribed in the directive. The directive has been transposed into national law.
There are no proposals for introducing further EU legislation in this area at present.
