Vol. 466 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Safety and Crowd Control Recommendations.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

74 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education whether an audit has been undertaken on the recommendations of the Committee on Public Safety and Crowd Control; the recommendations, if any, that are outstanding; and the plans, if any, she has to address these recommendations. [11297/96]

Following the tragedy at Hillsborough football stadium, the Hamilton Committee on Public Safety and Crowd Control was appointed by the Government. Arising from the recommendations of this committee the Department of Education, in January 1996, published detailed and comprehensive codes of practice for safety at sports grounds and for safety at outdoor pop concerts.

These codes, which comprehend all aspects of crowd safety at outdoor sport and outdoor music events were completed following extensive consultation with national sport organisations, stadium management, event promoters and the various statutory and non-statutory authorities. The codes take account of the reports of the Hamilton committee as well as the Finlay report on the incidents at Lansdowne Road in February 1995.
