Vol. 466 No. 7

Written Answers. - Breaking the Cycle Scheme.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

129 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education whether he has received a detailed submission from a school (details supplied) in Dublin 7 in support of its application for the breaking the cycle scheme; and if this school will be fully considered in view of the high level of disadvantage of many of the school children concerned. [12260/96]

I have received a submission from the school in question in support of its application for assistance under the breaking the cycle scheme. On the basis of the information currently available to my Department, this school in question would be eligible for consideration for support under the scheme. As such, I would expect that the school will have recently been invited by the Education Research Centre to submit an application for inclusion in the scheme.

The Education Research Centre will prioritise all applicants in terms of level of need as represented by the data submitted and will advise my Department of the outcome. Schools selected as a result of this process will be invited to submit five year development plans. Each such plan will be required to identify current difficulties and to put forward specific proposals and targets for addressing the problems of educational disadvantage over the period of the plan. Qualification for support under the initiative will depend on the submission of suitable development plans.
