Vol. 466 No. 8

Written Answers. - Disturbed Children.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

101 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the action, if any, her Department can take to respond to the needs of approximately 20 disturbed children (details supplied) in Dublin 10 who do not attend school and who are a serious threat to themselves and the local community; and if she will urgently respond to the proposal from the committee of local educators for a special pilot school unit. [12401/96]

The matters to which the Deputy refers, including the proposal from the committee of local educators, were only recently brought to the attention of my Department.

The proposal in question is currently being considered by my Department's inspectorate. Once this consideration has been completed, a member of the inspectorate will be in touch with the local committee with a view to discussing the proposal and the needs of the children concerned. I have requested that this meeting take place as soon as possible.
