Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

211 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, he has to grant assist a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8, who must repeat his third year computer science course due to ill health that he suffered during the year; his views on whether Dublin Corporation should be allowed to financially assist this person with a grant in view of the fact that he is more than anxious to complete his education which will be impossible without grant assistance. [12532/96]

Under the terms of the 1993 higher education grants scheme (the scheme applicable in this case) a local authority may award a grant in respect of a repeat year in exceptional circumstances such as certified serious illness.

The student referred to by the Deputy should contact Dublin Corporation, which is the relevant local authority in his case, to ascertain whether he satisfies the requirements for securing grant aid for a repeat year.
