Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Enforcement of Act.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

257 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice if she has satisfied herself that the provisions of the Loitering Act, 1994, are being operated satisfactorily; if her attention has been drawn to complaints from urban communities regarding anti-social behaviour by loitering gangs; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12566/96]

I assume that the Deputy is referring, in fact, to the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, which created a number of offences relating to public disorder and loitering. The provisions of the Act are operating satisfactorily. Provisional figures for 1995 show that 10,209 proceedings were instituted under the Act. I am satisfied that the Garda authorities are making appropriate use of the Act to control improper behaviour.
