Vol. 467 No. 1

Written Answers. - Lugano Convention.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

92 Mr. Shatter asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the Lugano Convention is in force in each European Free Trade Association country; if not, the countries in which it is not in force; and when it is anticipated it will be brought into force by such countries. [12791/96]

The convention on jurisdiction and the enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters done at Lugano on 16 September 1988 is not in force in each European Free Trade Association country. The convention is not in force in Liechtenstein. My Department is not aware of any plans by Liechtenstein to accede to the convention. The convention is in force in all other EFTA countries.

The Deputy may be interested to know that the convention is in force in all EU member states, except Austria, Belgium and Greece, all of which have signed but not yet ratified the convention.
