Vol. 467 No. 2

Written Answers. - Extradition Warrant.

Bertie Ahern

Ceist:

64 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the British official that was alerted in respect of the mix-up regarding original and photocopied documents in relation to the Anthony Duncan extradition case of 13 April 1996; the Irish official who made that contact; and when such contact, if any, was made. [11072/96]

The first British official who was alerted to the flaw in the warrant was the detective superintendent from New Scotland Yard who was in court on the morning of Saturday, 13 April, the date of the unsuccessful hearing.

At approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday, 13 April, having requested the matter to stand, the solicitor for the State drew the attention of a number of people, including that of the detective superintendent from New Scotland Yard, to the flaw in the warrant. The detective superintendent examined the purported warrant when the flaw was drawn to his attention. He then made contact with officials in London.
