Vol. 467 No. 3

Written Answers. - Effect of UK Policy of Non Cooperation.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

33 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Social Welfare the EU actions, if any, in the areas of welfare and the combating of social exclusion that have been affected by the recent United Kingdom policy of non co-operation in the EU; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13045/96]

To date no EU actions in the areas of welfare and the combating of social exclusion have been affected by the United Kingdom's policy of non co-operation in the EU. It is not possible to state what the possible implications of such policy might be in the future.

As of now the problem of UK non co-operation is one to be dealt with by the Italian Presidency of the EU. The European Commission has recently agreed the terms of a deal which, it is hoped, will resolve the problem. The position will be clearer after this weekend's Florence Summit.
