Vol. 467 No. 4

Written Answers. - INTERREG Programme.

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

39 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the total funding available under INTERREG II and the Operational Programme for Peace and Reconciliation for tourism development; the projects assisted to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13407/96]

Kathleen Lynch

Ceist:

61 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the tourism projects between Ireland and Wales being funded under the EU Maritime INTERREG Programme; the plans, if any, he has for the further development of these partnership programmes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13444/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 39 and 61 together.

The tourism-culture measure of the Ireland-Northern Ireland INTERREG II Programme (1994-1999) provides £10 million for tourism development in the Border counties. The following table, sets out details supplied by the Joint North-South Tourism Working Group who are responsible for administering the programme, in relation to the 23 projects which have been approved to date.

The Maritime INTERREG II Programme (1994-1999) provides £4.5 million on the Irish side for tourism and cultural co-operation. The programme was launched in December 1995 and applications for a number of projects are currently being assessed by Bord Fáilte.

Tourism related projects are also eligible for assistance under a number of measures of the Special Support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (1995-1999). My Department has no direct involvement in the selection of projects or in the payment of grants to tourism projects which may be approved by the appropriate selection body. Details in relation to the measures and eligible activities can be found in the programme which was, I understand, circulated to all Oireachtas Members shortly after the programme was adopted in July 1995.
