Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mountjoy Medical Services.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

267 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the difficulties that are being experienced by her Department in agreeing a common contract with the Irish Medical Organisation in relation to the provision of medical services to Mountjoy in view of the criticisms of that service in the Mountjoy Visiting Committee report; the steps, if any, she is taking to urgently sort out this problem in view of the extensive medical problems of prisoners, the high rates of attempted suicide and prison deaths; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14145/96]

Negotiations regarding the establishment of a common contract of employment for all doctors providing medical services to the prisons and places of detention are at a delicate stage. The Deputy will appreciate that there are two parties to these negotiations and that genuine differences have to be worked through. Negotiations have been intensified and I am hopeful that they will be brought to finality soon.
