Vol. 467 No. 7

Written Answers. - New Courthouses.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

270 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice the number and location of new District and Circuit courthouses in each of the north-eastern counties that are under consideration by her Department; the current status of each such courthouse; the capital provision, if any, she has made for such development in 1996; the capital expenditure that will be required in 1997 for the completion of these projects; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14248/96]

The various options available are now being considered in relation to providing proper court facilities in Drogheda, County Louth and Navan, County Meath.

The business to be transacted at each proposed new courthouse will be District Court sittings as specified by the statutory regulations. Under the terms of section 10 of the Courts of Justice Act, 1947 the fixing of venues within a circuit court is a matter for the president of the Circuit Court in consultation with the Circuit Court judge permanently assigned to that circuit.
At this stage it is too early to give any indication as to the timescale, costings etc. other than to say that I am committed to ensuring that such facilities will be made available in due course.

Ceist:

271 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice the outcome of the discussions with the county manager of Louth County Council in relation to his offer of a site for the building of a new courthouse for Drogheda; the alternative sites, if any, that her Department is considering; if so, the names of such sites; the cost of the purchase of the site as offered by the county manager on behalf of Drogheda Corporation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14274/96]

Ceist:

291 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice the outcome of discussions with the county manager of Louth County Council in relation to his offer of a site for the building of a new courthouse for Drogheda; the alternative sites, if any, there are in Drogheda; the cost of the site as offered by the county manager on behalf of Drogheda Corporation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.[14381/96]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 271 and 291 together.

My Department is currently considering the various options available for providing court facilities in Drogheda and I do not propose to comment further at this stage other than to say that the discussions in question are still in progress.
