Vol. 468 No. 1

Written Answers. - Wheelchair Access to School.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

137 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education if she will make available the funding required to provide the necessary physical changes to the buildings of a secondary school to enable a child (details supplied) in County Meath who uses a wheelchair to attend the school; and her views on whether all efforts should be made to ensure that the child is allowed to attend secondary school with her contemporaries. [14493/96]

The post primary building unit of my Department received a request from the authorities of the school in question for funding towards the provision of suitable facilities to accommodate a disabled student who wished to attend the school.

The Department's senior architect recently visited the school to assess the requirements for the necessary disabled facilities.

When the senior architect has compiled his report the Department will be in contact with the school authorities to progress the matter further.

I assure the Deputy that this application is being dealt with expeditiously and every effort will be made to meet the requirements of the school within the capital resources available to the Department.
