Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Coroner Remuneration.

Michael Woods

Ceist:

145 Dr. Woods asked the Minister for Justice the current remuneration for coroners in Dublin city and county; when this payment was last reviewed; and the plans, if any, she has to update the payment to bring it into line with current levels of remuneration. [14866/96]

The current salary scale, with effect from 1 June 1996, of the coroner for Dublin City is £27,014 rising to £29,058 per annum. The salary of the coroner for Dublin County with effect from 1 June 1996 is £8,406 per annum.

The provisions governing the determination and payment of coroners' salaries generally are contained in section 9 of the Coroners Act, 1962 which provides, inter alia, that the salary of each coroner shall be fixed by the local authority by whom the coroner is appointed, with the approval of the Minister for Justice and after consulation with the Minister for the Environment. My Department is engaged in ongoing discussions with the Department of the Environment in relation to a review of coroners' remuneration.
