Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Visit of US Aircraft Carrier.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

42 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the measures, if any, that have been taken by the Government to ensure that there will be no nuclear weapons on board the US aircraft carrier during its visit to Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14319/96]

It has been the policy of successive Governments to grant permission for visits by naval vessels provided that they do not form part of a naval exercise and that they are not carrying nuclear weapons. The US authorities have been made well aware of our policy in this regard. As the House may be aware, the US authorities have publicly confirmed that the visiting naval vessel will not be carrying nuclear weapons.
