I have had inquiries made by the Medical Council in relation to the matters raised by the Deputy. The Medical Council has informed me that it does not have a policy of unionising its staff. It is a matter for the staff as to whether they wish individually or collectively to join a union. The Medical Council does not have information on the number of staff that may have joined unions in each of the years 1994-96. Its policy on staff joining unions is that one body should represent the staff in matters of concern to the staff.
