Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Accessibility.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

115 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the efforts, if any, that have been made to undertake a full assessment of the accessibility of children with disabilities to all school buildings; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14784/96]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to her parliamentary question of 5 October 1995.

While the level of access to all school buildings nationally has not been established to date, the position is as set out in that reply.

All new school accommodation being grant-aided by my Department includes access and other facilities for people with disabilities.
Where some older buildings may not have such facilities, my Department will continue to give priority to the provision of funding for alteration works where it is notified of a need by the schools and colleges concerned.
