Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Hugh Byrne

Ceist:

450 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the school bus system is most unsatisfactory, namely due to constant breakdowns leading to pupils being late for school, children standing in the rain at pick-up points while waiting on such a bus, buses not turning up for transport at all, over loading of buses with many pupils standing in the aisle, the first pick-up in the morning being at 6.55 am and being left home at 5.05 pm and the wait outside school gates due to an insufficient number of buses; the way in which she proposes to deal with the matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15244/96]

My Department strives to provide the best possible level of school transport for all eligible pupils, with the resources available. The matters to which the Deputy refers are among those currently being considered by the School Transport Review Committee, which is expected to report later this year. When I have considered the recommendations of the committee, I will decide on any future changes to the school transport scheme.
