Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Meeting with SDLP.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

16 Miss Harney asked the Taoiseach if he will report on his meeting with an SDLP delegation on Monday, 15 July 1996. [15825/96]

The Government had a very useful meeting on 15 July with a SDLP delegation led by the party leader.

The meeting took place against the background of violence in the aftermath of the decisions on marches through the Garvaghy Road and the Lower Ormeau Road. The SDLP placed particular emphasis on the very strong sense of anger which these decisions had caused in the Nationalist community. For our part, the Government assured the delegation of our full understanding of Nationalist concerns in Northern Ireland and that these concerns had been forthrightly conveyed to the British Government at the highest level.

The Government and SDLP delegations were at idem in our condemnation of violence and we reaffirmed our strong determination to restore the primacy of the political process.
