Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Disabled Children's Education.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

533 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the options open to parents of children with disabilities who are assessed as suitable for attendance at a mainstream primary school and have received funding for a classroom assistant, where they believe that the teacher and school authorities are not giving their child a proper chance; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15912/96]

If the Deputy is referring to difficulties regarding the enrolment of children, I should point out that the enrolment policy for national schools is generally a matter for the board of management of each school and parents are advised to contact the board in the first instance. My Department will investigate where it is claimed that a board is operating its enrolment policy in a manner which discriminates against a particular child.

Where parents believe their child is being unfairly treated it is open to them to make a complaint using the Department's agreed complaints procedure but only after every effort has been made to resolve the matter at local level.
