Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Foot Patrols.

Brian Lenihan

Ceist:

590 Mr. Lenihan asked the Minister for Justice her current policy in respect of the provision of foot patrols by An Garda Síochána in suburban areas; the reason such patrols are not carried out; and if she will make a statement on the policy of foot patrols generally [15312/96]

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

647 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice her views on the need and importance of Garda foot patrols in each area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15730/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 590 and 647 together.

The deployment of Garda personnel in individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities.

They have informed me that it is the policy of An Garda Síochána to have foot patrols performed in all areas. The local deployment of personnel is a matter for the local district officer who ensures that personnel are deployed in accordance with the local priorities and available resources. The Garda authorities assure me that where particular problem areas are identified by local management mobile and foot patrols are arranged as required.
