Written Answers. - Prison Costs.
The weekly cost of the operation of the prison system per head of the prisoner population was approximately £860 in 1995, based on the 1995 outturn.
This figure does not include any element in respect of capital expenditure or expenditure not connected with the running of the prisons e.g. probation and welfare service and community service orders scheme. Relevant costs borne on other Votes are included, such as superannuation, teachers salaries.
