Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Student Summer Jobs Scheme.

Micheál Martin

Ceist:

707 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will permit a person (details supplied) in County Cork to participate in the student summer job scheme in view of the fact that she is a full-time student who is currently pursuing a bachelor of business studies course. [15052/96]

The underlying purpose of the scheme is to provide income support for less well off third level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance and are unable to obtain summer work. Priority, therefore, is being given to enable the maximum number of eligible low income students to participate within the overall financial allocation of £10.2 million for the 1996 scheme.

The person concerned is not affected by the 1993 disqualification on students claiming unemployment assistance and consequently is not eligible for participation in the student summer jobs scheme. If she is unable to find alternative work she may qualify, subject to a means test, for unemployment assistance.
