616 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the steps, if any, he has taken to deal with the welfare of animals on a farm (details supplied) in County Donegal; the number of animals involved; the number of animals that have died; the disposal of milk quota and animals on the farm; the overall cost of this operation; and if costs will be recouped from any source. Some animal mortality and consequent financial loss is a difficult facet of livestock farming which herdowners accept as part and parcel of any cattle enterprise. I am satisfied that, having regard to the large size of the herd in question, there is nothing untoward in relation to mortality level and herd welfare.

Under the regulations governing the milk quota system, when land is transferred, the milk quota which is attached to that land transfers to the purchaser of the land.

The costs associated with the disposal of land and cattle by sale is a private matter between the parties.
