Vol. 469 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin All-Irish Schools.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

43 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the number of all-Irish secondary schools on the northside of Dublin; the number of pupils in each school; the maximum number which each school has catered for in the past; the current capacity of each school; and if there is excess capacity available in existing schools for the future flow of students who wish to attend an all-Irish school. [17560/96]

The needs of pupils seeking all-Irish post-primary education on the northside of Dublin are at present met by two schools, Coláiste Mhuire, Parnell Square, Dublin 1, with 286 pupils, and Scoil Caitríona, Mobhi Road, Dublin 9, with 436 pupils. My Department's records indicate that Coláiste Mhuire catered for an enrolment of approximately 430 pupils in the late 1960s. The capacity of this school is now considered to be between 300 and 350 pupil places. Scoil Caitríona, which was built in 1972, can accommodate around 500 pupils. Enrolment in the school has not exceeded 443 pupils to date.

It is considered that these schools are catering adequately for the need for all-Irish post-primary education on the northside of Dublin at present. However, the planning section of my Department will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that there are sufficient places to meet demand. In this context, an application for the provision of a further all-Irish post-primary school in the northeast of Dublin is currently under consideration.
