Vol. 469 No. 5

Written Answers. - MMDS Transmitters.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

213 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the number of MMDS transmitters located on phone masts throughout the country; the number of MMDS transmitters erected in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17679/96]

Two types of transmitters are used in the provision of MMDS multi-channel TV services. The main or primary transmitters serve the general geographic area in each particular MMDS cell. The number of these erected in the last five calendar years is as follows: 1991, 6; 1992, 4; 1993, 5; 1994, 0 and 1995, 1. There are seven of these transmitters erected on phone masts.

In addition there are smaller "in-fill" transmitters used to provide service to small areas within an MMDS cell where the primary signal is not available for some reason. The number of these erected in the last five calendar years is as follows: 1991, 3; 1992, 3; 1993, 35; 1994, 37 and 1995, 27. There are two of these transmitters erected on phone masts.
