Vol. 469 No. 6

Written Answers. - Roads Classification.

James Leonard

Ceist:

44 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has for the reclassification of roads in the Border counties to take account of increased usage. [17399/96]

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

58 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider upgrading the road from Waterford city to Dunmore East to that of national primary status in view of the large volume of traffic on that route. [14014/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 44 and 58 together.

A lengthy and comprehensive review of the national road system was brought to a conclusion in July 1994 with the making of the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of National Roads) Order, 1994. The regional road network was also classified in the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of Regional Roads) Order, 1994. I do not propose to make any major changes in the classification of these networks in the near future. Traffic patterns will continue to be monitored in order to identify any long-term changes which might have implications for the road classifications.
