Vol. 470 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Hugh Byrne

Ceist:

134 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the fact that there is no Garda sergeant in Carrickbyrne, County Wexford; when the post will be filled; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18776/96]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas. They have informed me that following the transfer of the sergeant on 18 June, 1996, the strength of Carrickbyrne Garda station is one garda. The station opens from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. when the allocated garda is rostered for early duty and when closed there is a direct communications link to New Ross Garda station. I also understand that mobile units from New Ross and Ballycullane Garda stations regularly patrol the sub-district.

The Garda authorities have informed me that they are satisfied with the current policing arrangements for the Carrickbyrne area and that the question of allocating a sergeant to Carrickbyrne Garda station will be considered in conjunction with similar vacancies when members of sergeant rank next become available for allocation.
