Vol. 470 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Teaching.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

123 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the percentage of children in County Donegal who have access to remedial tuition in view of the fact that there are only 37 teachers for 104 schools and 74 schools without assistance and in view of the fact that in a reply to previous parliamentary questions she stated that 87 per cent of children have access to remedial help; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18795/96]

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

124 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education whether 42 per cent of schools in County Donegal are without remedial assistance. [18796/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 123 and 124 together.

Based on the most up to date enrolment data available to my Department, it is calculated that 78 per cent of the children attending primary school in County Donegal have access to a remedial teacher service.

The figure of 87 per cent to which the Deputy refers relates to the overall level of coverage achieved by the remedial service on a national basis.

Forty-two per cent of primary schools in County Donegal do not currently have access to a remedial teacher service. The schools in question cater for 22 per cent of the pupils attending primary school in the county.
