Vol. 470 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Bus Purchase.

Ben Briscoe

Ceist:

165 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Education if second-hand buses were purchased from Singapore; if so, the number of such buses which were purchased; when they were purchased; the cost involved; the problems, if any, such buses have given; the current routes of these buses; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19012/96]

As part of an ongoing fleet replacement programme, Bus Éireann purchased 320 second-hand buses from Singapore in 1994. All these vehicles meet Department of Environment regulations, and, having undergone initial minor modification, are operating satisfactorily in the school transport scheme throughout the country. The cost of these buses was funded directly from Bus Éireann's resources. Further details regarding the cost of these vehicles is a matter for Bus Éireann.

These 320 buses are part of a fleet of approximately 2,500 vehicles, procured by Bus Éireann and the private sector, which operate some 6,000 routes, covering 34 million miles annually in the delivery of the school transport scheme.
Bus Éireann, who operate the scheme on behalf of the Department are committed to providing the best overall standard of service possible, having regard to the resources available to support the school transport system as a whole.
