Vol. 470 No. 4

Written Answers. - RTC Construction Provision.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

167 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education if she will confirm provision in her Department's Estimates for the construction of a regional technical college at Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, in view of the expiry date of March 1997 of the option to purchase the town centre site at pre-1990 prices. [19023/96]

The report of the Steering Committee on the Future Development of Higher Education makes a series of recommendations in relation to the future development of the higher education sector overall; in particular it recommended that a regional technical college be located in Blanchardstown to serve the north, north-west and north-east Dublin region as well as growth areas in Meath and Kildare.

Having regard to existing major capital commitments, other priorities and overall resource constraints no provision was made in the 1996 Estimates for the acquisition of the Blanchardstown site.

The question of the purchase of the site will be considered by my Department having regard to the range of priorities and commitments in the third level capital area and to Government decisions on the 1997 Estimates.
