Matt Brennan

Ceist:

30 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of farmers who claimed in excess of £7,000, £10,000, £20,000, £25,000, £50,000 and £100,000 for set aside in each of the years 1995 and 1996; and if he will give a breakdown in respect of each county. [16364/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 25 and 30 together.

The following are the 1995 and estimated 1996 figures for the number of arable area aid applicants qualifying or likely to qualify for set aside payments in the categories listed by the Deputy.

I am arranging to send the Deputy a breakdown by county.
No applicant claimed more than £50,000 for set aside in 1995 or 1996. The number of farmers in receipt of set aside payments for amounts up to £7,000 was 3,525 in 1995 and a somewhat similar figure is estimated for 1996. The reduction in the total number of arable area aid applicants likely to qualify for set aside payments of more than £7,000 in 1996 is due largely to the reduction to 15 per cent of the maximum set aside area for this year.
The total amount of money paid out in set aside since its implementation is as follows: 1993, £6.8 million; 1994, £12.3 million; 1995, £11.5 million; total, £30.6 million.
