Vol. 470 No. 5

Written Answers. - Field Sports.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

41 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if the practice referred to as autumn hunting (details supplied) has been brought to his attention; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter. [18255/96]

I understand that the practice in question is associated with fox hunting. As I indicated in a previous reply to the House, it is generally recognised that field sports like fox hunting are part of the traditional fabric of rural life and have the support and participation of a broad cross-section of people in rural communities. This is strongly reflected in the many representations made to me by organisations and individuals in this matter. Nevertheless, as I indicated to the Deputy on a previous occasion, there are aspects of fox hunting which require consideration from the standpoint of animal welfare. The Deputy is aware that I have afforded the many parties with an interest in this issue an opportunity to let me have their views, by way of meetings or written submissions. This is a most complex and emotive issue and I wish to have the benefit of hearing the full range of views before taking decisions. This consultative process is well advanced but not yet complete. When it is, I will take account of the balance of the views received in any decisions to be made.
