Vol. 470 No. 5

Written Answers. - Potato Marketing.

Seamus Kirk

Ceist:

116 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will consider, as President of the EU Farm Council, the possibility of establishing a common market organisation for potatoes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19519/96]

A proposal for the establishment of a common organisation of the market in potatoes was first put forward by the Commission in 1976. The latest proposal by the Commission was put forward in 1992. It has not been possible to secure sufficient support in the Council to adopt these proposals.

Notwithstanding the difficulties involved, it is my intention that the Irish Presidency will endeavour to secure the agreement of the Council to the establishment of a common organisation of the market in potatoes.
