Earlier this year I approved the allocation of funding under the Operational Programme for Transport 1994 to 1999 for a £17 million package of DART and suburban rail investment in the greater Dublin area. The package comprises the construction of new DART stations at Fairview and Barrow Street, the refurbishment of Kilbarrack DART station, the reopening of Drumcondra station, the purchase of additional DART rolling stock, the development of park and ride sites along the DART corridor and the introduction of integrated public transport ticketing.
The package, as approved, was based on a DTI-recommended strategy designed to make better use of the existing suburban rail network. Detailed proposals were drawn up by CIÉ, based on the DTI recommendations, were approved by my Department. CIÉ has responsibility for implementing the individual elements of the package.
